THE KING
The King had lots of power during the medieval era but not nearly as much as the Pope. He controlled his land and the people on it. He could also control his armies whereas the Pope could overrule him and lead the armies elsewhere. The King was incapable of ruling over other castles unless he conquered them. The Pope ruled over all towns that were part of the Christian Church. |
THE POPE
The Pope was another center of power during the Middle Ages. He had more power than the king because he could command armies, choose what happens to people's land, and he could excommunicate the king. |
The Magna Carta played a very important role during the Medieval Ages. The Magna Carta was the first system of checks and balances and it limited the king's power. The nobles and barons limited the king's power by making a law that said that the king can't apply new taxes or increase the current taxes without the ok from them.
The Crusades took place because Pope Urban II urged everybody to go and reclaim the Holy Land of Jerusalem. So when the Crusades began the Crusaders had won back the Holy Land. But in later crusades the Muslims regained control of Jerusalem and forced the Crusaders out. Some of the consequences of the Crusades were that many people were massacred and the Christian's didn't regain control of the Holy Land.
