The five good emperors
a monarchy to a republic
Rome switched from a Monarchy to a Republic in 509 B.C. The Romans converted because the kings started to abuse their power and the kings often waged war to try to gain power over everything. The Romans solved this problem by creating a Republic. The Republic worked by using a system of checks and balances.
Checks and Balances are: Limits imposed on all branches of a government by vesting in each branch the right to amend or void those acts of another that fall within its purview.

The u.s. compared to rome
There are many similarities and differences between the Roman Republic and the United States Government. An example of a similarity is that both the United States and the Roman Republic elected their senators. Another similarity between the two is that the U.S. and Rome use the system of checks and balances. A third similarity between Rome and the United States is that both parties have the same branches of government which are the Judicial Branch, the Legislative Branch, and the Executive Branch. A difference between the United States and Rome is that Rome conquered its enemies and kept their land whereas the United States just stops the threat and leaves the land to its rightful owners.
